how the logo design process works, and
common questions about logos.
Why Do You Need a Logo?
Your logo is your identity. Every business needs a logo.
It’s how your company is recognized. Every communication with your
customer or with the public should use your logo – billboards,
websites, letterhead, envelops, invoices, purchase orders, fax cover sheets, reports,
and all sorts of advertisements should use the same logo and the same
colors. A good logo communicates the ideas and attitude of your
company to your customers.
The consistent use of a logo is an important marketing tool.
Consistent logo usage “connects” your various marketing methods in
the mind of the casual observer. Suppose you advertise on cable TV
ad, on a billboard, and in a phone book ad. Even a casual observer
who glanced at the TV and drove by the billboard may recognize your
logo when looking in the phone book.
A good logo can improve name recognition and even pass the
boundaries of language. Young children who can’t read can recognize
a logo.
Every company of any significance has a professionally designed
logo, and you risk portraying your company as unprofessional if you
do not have one.

So Where Do We Start with
Logo Development?
- We do not use a cookie-cutter approach to logo development.
Here’s a step-by-step explanation of the process.
- Whether you want a simple type-only logo or a more graphic
or illustrative logo, we start by talking with the client and
learning about the business.
- We develop some drafts – usually in black and white and send
them to the client for feedback. We concentrate on communicating
the attitude of the company. Computers Made Easy also works out
technical details to make sure the logo designs will maintain
readability at a variety of sizes and in a variety of uses.
- Computers Made Easy develops a second draft of logos based on the
clients feedback. We start adding colors and effects to the logo
for a more finished effect.
- As needed we provide additional drafts, continually refining
the logo.
- Once the final logo is agreed on, we create the file in a
variety of file types and sizes. We use it on the website design
and supply it to the customer for their use.

Common Questions About
Logo Design
Why does a computer company design logos? What is your
background?
Computers Made Easy is a computer company with an art background.
Jane Noel, one of the owners of Computers Made Easy has an
Associates Degree in Visual Communications from the Art Institute of
Pittsburgh and a Bachelors of Visual Arts from Point Park College.
Jane did traditional design before computers were used for design!
Some of her logos have been in use for nearly 20 years.
After graduating from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Jane Noel
worked for several years at a printing company. She became more
interested in computer graphics and transitioned into the computer
game industry. Jane spent many years in the computer game industry
as an artist and art director. When she left the gaming industry she
founded Computers Made Easy. Computers Made Easy started as a
computer training company, but we now focus primarily on web design. Jane
started doing logo design because she found a number of web design
clients did not have a logo – and they needed one!
How much does a logo cost?
That’s always a tough question and somewhat difficult to answer.
Like web sites, the costs of a logo design varies. It depends on
complexity, changes, and the files needed. Some customers have a
good idea of what they want, others do not even know what a logo is.
Some logos are simple, text-only designs. Others have illustrations
or more graphic icons involved. Do you only work with local
companies? At Computers Made Easy we work with clients all
over the southwestern PA, Ohio and across the eastern US. We
are based neared Greensburg, PA. (Greensburg is 30 miles
east of Pittsburgh.)
Logo design, like web design, requires good communication. We communicate effectively through phone,
messaging, and email. We have web design clients and logo
design clients that we've never met personally. While it may
be convenient to meet personally, good communication is not
dependent on it.
Should I make my own logo?
For most people, the answer is no. Most people do not have the
skills or marketing background to create an effective design. However, some people do
have the skills and ideas and just need help with execution. We can
help either customer.
How do I decide which logo design is best?
There are a number of things you should consider when evaluating
logo designs. Look at it, have others in your company look at it,
and show it to others – customers, friends and family. The more
opinions you have to consider, the better decision you can make.
Do you like the logo design?
Consider it. Show it to others. Get opinions.
It’s very important that you choose a design that you like. You want
to plan on using this logo consistently, in all of your marketing
materials, for many years to come.
Does it say something about your company?
While you want an interesting looking logo design, you also
want it to say something about the personality and attitudes of your
company.
Is the logo design easy to read?
Will people be able to read it from a distance? The letters and
symbols should be easily recognizable.
Will it work in one color as well as multi-color?
It’s important that a logo “reads well” and remains recognizable
even in one color. Fax machines are one color and shading translates
poorly. You may want to save money by printing a one color design
rather than being forced to pay for a two or three color design.
Does the logo design work well in different sizes?
The same logo that must fit on a 2” x 3.5” business card may be used
on a 20’ billboard. A good logo maintains readability at all sizes.
Are the colors in the logo suitable for your company and
industry?
Logo’s may be designed in one color, two color, or even full color.
There is a psychology to color that should be used to your
advantage. It’s not an accident that many bank and financial logos
are green. Many food logos use reds and yellows. Certain colors are
more effective in different industries.
