Rotating Text in Excel
Rotating text in Excel is an excellent formatting tool to improve
the look and the readability of your spreadsheets. Here is an
example of the same spreadsheet. The top spreadsheet has minimal
formatting, the headings have been rotated in the bottom example.

We see only a portion of the top spreadsheet (columns A-K). To view
L-Z, the user must to scroll, making it more difficult to view, edit
and print the spreadsheet.
In the bottom spreadsheet, the columns only need to be as wide as
the widest data contained in the column. This makes it easier to
view, edit, and print.
- The first step to rotating the text is to select the desired
cell or cells. In the example above, all of row 1 was selected.
- On the Format Menu, choose Cells. When the Format Cells box
appears, click the Alignment tab at the top. An Orientation box
appears to the right.
- Click the red diamond in the clock-like Orientation box and
drag it to the desired angle. Or, if preferred, click the
vertical Text box next to the clock-like box.
- Click OK to view the changes on the page.

Some of the other alignment options allow you to wrap text,
shrink text to fit in the cells, or merge (and un-merge) cells.
You can also set the left, center, and right options both
horizontally and vertically.
