Inserting Symbols in Word
It is often useful to insert symbols into Word documents. There
are a wide variety of symbols including a copyright or trademark, a
heart or diamond, an arrow, a Greek letter, or an N with a tilde
over it.
- To insert a symbol, click the Insert menu and choose Symbol.
- The box shown here is displayed. Click once on a symbol to
enlarge it.
- With the desired symbol selected, click Insert to add it to
the document.

If you do not see the symbol you desire, click on the drop
down arrow to select a different font. Most computers have a
number of different fonts that supply unusual symbols.
(Wingdings, Webdings, Marlett, Symbol, and Vacation are commonly
found.)
If it is a symbol that you plan to use frequently, you can
tie it to a shortcut key combination or use autocorrect to
automatically add it to your document as you type. A few
symbols are already in Word's autocorrect list. Typing "(c)",
"(r)", or "(tm)" (without the quotes) automatically inserts the
symbol into your document.
