Spyware and What it Does to Your Computer.
Spyware refers to a type of program that may be on your computer. You
may not even realize that it has been installed. It secretly logs
your actions and sends data back to the company that created it. This data may be
sold to telemarketers (who then send you spam) or to target
advertising based on what you do on the internet. Often, you agree
to this...in that licensing agreement that you probably did not read
when you downloaded something from the Internet.
However, some programs and websites do this without your knowledge or even your
consent. Most Spyware is packaged along with some "free" program.
Kazaa, BearShare, Comet Cursor, Real Player, and Gator are common
examples. Many of these install a useful program for sharing music,
animating cursors, or helping to remember passwords. Spyware often
causes problems. These are free programs and the companies do not
have a vested interest in making sure it works well on your
computer. I've seen Kazaa slow down a cable connection to the point
where it took 90 seconds to access the home page. I've seen Lop.com
and Xupiter hijack the browser, make a new home page, make new
favorites. I've seen Gator cause Internet disconnection problems.
It is essential to run anti-Spyware programs if you are active on
the Internet.
