Favorites or Bookmarks

Favorites are computer locations that you mark as a place you want to go to often – one of your favorite places. Most often, favorites are used on the Internet to mark web sites or web pages that you want to keep. Some programs call favorites “bookmarks.”

Bookmarks are a good description. Imagine that the Internet is a huge library containing many books (web sites) with many pages (web pages) – all of which are constantly updated. You can quickly return to the place where you left off or a place you want to return to by sticking a bookmark on the page. This is one of your Favorite Places.

Let’s talk about how different programs use Favorites.

America-On-Line and CompuServe

AOL and CompuServe allow you to work with your favorite places in the menu or in the toolbar button, both labeled “Favorites.” You can add the site you are currently viewing by dragging the heart or checkmark in the web page’s window to the “Favorites” folder shown on the toolbar. Another way you can add the site to the list of your favorites is to click the Favorites menu and choose the “Add to Favorites” option.

Once a web page has been added to your favorites, you can return to that site by clicking on the Favorites (menu or toolbar) and choosing the web page’s name from the list. It’s fast and easy.

Internet Explorer

Using Internet Explorer you can add a web page to favorites using the menu or the button on the toolbar – both labeled Favorites. The button on the toolbar opens a Favorites window on the left side of the browser program. While viewing the page you want keep as a favorite, click the top choice in the menu or the Add button in the Favorites window to add the current web page to your list of favorites.

To return to a web page in your list, click the Favorites menu and choose the desired web page or click the Favorites button on the toolbar to open the Favorites window and pick it from the list. Click the Favorites button on the toolbar once more to close the Favorites window (so you can see more of your page.)

Netscape Communicator

Netscape calls favorites Bookmarks. To add viewed web page to your bookmarks, click the Bookmark button and click Add to Bookmarks.

To later return to that same page, click the Bookmark button and find the desired bookmark on the list.
