Changing your Wallpaper or Background
It's fun and easy to change the background picture that appears
on your computer's desktop. The various versions of Windows come
with different pictures to pick from. You can also use your own
pictures saved from a scanner, digital camera, email, or from the
Internet. If you have the picture on your computer, you can use it
as a background image. By far, the most difficult part of this
process is knowing where the picture is located in your files.
Windows has placed a My Pictures folder in the My Documents folder.
This is an ideal place to store images from a digital camera or
scanner.
To Change the Wallpaper
- To access the Display Properties Window, click on an
empty spot on the desktop with the right mouse button.
- On the shortcut menu that appears, left click on
Properties. The Display Properties box appears.
- Click the Background tab at the top to see something
similar to what is shown here. In Windows XP, the tab is
called Desktop.
Scroll through the list of available pictures, or click
Browse to look for a picture elsewhere on the computer
(such as in the My Pictures folder).
- Note the preview in the "monitor" in the top of the
display box.
- In the bottom right corner, there is a box labeled
Display. Use that to Center the image, Tile the image
(repeat it over and over in the way flooring tiles are
repeated), or Stretch the image. Use the preview
window to decide the best setting for your picture.
- Click Apply to see it on the background. Make any
necessary adjustments, then click OK to close the box.

In some instances, your computer may bring up a message box that
says you can only use this image if you use Active Desktop. If that
happens, click Yes and your image will appear.
At anytime, you can change to a different image. If you tire of
pictures and wish to have a solid color back, scroll to the top of
the picture list and choose "None."
