How Fonts Work

Fonts are different designs for letters and numbers. They are used to change the "look" of documents you create. Some are plain, others are fancy, some are bold, and some are fun!

Fonts must be installed on your machine in order for you to view or print text in that font. For example, if this web page were created using a font that you don’t have, it won’t display on your computer the same as it does on mine. 

You don’t have to do anything special to install fonts on your computer. When Windows (or MAC OS) was installed on your machine, a number of fonts were automatically installed. Any number of programs may have installed more fonts – like your word processor, a greeting card program, or a photo editing program. Since you have different programs installed, the fonts on your machine may vary greatly from other people’s computers.
