Escaping Problems with the ESC key.
Way back in the DOS days (before Windows was commonly used), the
Escape key was very important. It was one way to stop a failed
software program. The Escape key is in the top left corner of the
keyboard and is usually labeled ESC. In Windows, the Escape key is
still useful. Sometimes it can help get you out of a problem
situation. Here are two examples:
- Suppose you are in the process of renaming a file when you
discover that you are renaming the wrong file. Hit the Escape
Key to stop the renaming process and return the file to its
original name.
- Suppose a software program you are using is not acting like you
expect. It may be waiting for you to do something, but you don't
know what. Try using the Escape key to stop it.
- The Escape key is also a "keyboard shortcut" for Cancel.
Hitting the Escape key does the same thing as a cancel button
(if one is available) and is sometimes more convenient.
