Sorting Email in Outlook and Outlook Express
If you send and
receive a lot of email, you sometimes need to sort through it to find
one particular email. This page has some tips to help you do just that.
Outlook and Outlook
Express are both popular email programs from Microsoft. Outlook Express comes with Windows, so almost everyone owns
it. Outlook is a full
software package that contains the email program as well as an
appointment book, contacts list, and a “to do” list.
These tips apply to both programs.
You can sort your
email by any of the headings in your Inbox.
The picture below shows the headings for Priorities,
Attachments, Flags, From, Subject, and Received. Notice
the gray arrow on the Received box in this image.
This indicates that this Inbox is currently sorted by the date
received. This is the default setting.

- Click
on any of the heading boxes to sort by that heading.
- Click
on the heading containing the arrow to reverse the direction of
the order.
Use this technique to sort through your Inbox, Sent Folder, or
even your Deleted Folder. (The names of the headings change in the
Sent Mail folder – instead of From, the heading is To, instead of
Received the heading is Sent.) If you are looking for an email from
a particular person, click on the From heading to sort your emails
by the names. Suppose you remember the subject of an email you sent
and you want to know when you sent it. Click the Subject heading to
sort the email by the subjects.
